San Jose Earthquakes have announced the sudden passing of their head sporting strategist, Vassili Cremanzidis, at the age of 36. The Earthquakes did not specify a cause of death, but BPM Sports radio reported that Cremanzidis died of cancer. Cremanzidis was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma at age 10 and had the disease three times before he was in remission by age 15. The San Jose Earthquakes's technical staff and players are in shock and sadness over the loss of their colleague and friend. Cremanzidis began his career with CF Montréal in 2013 as a performance analyst and later joined the Earthquakes technical staff from 2016 to 2018. He returned to Montréal to serve as head of analysis and assistant director of player personnel before being promoted to assistant sporting director in 2020. Cremanzidis returned to San Jose in 2024 as head sporting strategist, reporting directly to general manager Chris Leitch. The club has expressed their deepest condolences to Cremanzidis's family, friends, and everyone whose lives he has touched. Cremanzidis was a genuinely beloved and respected man whose professionalism and commitment to the club on the field were only equaled by his selflessness, compassion for others, and overall positive outlook on life. The San Jose Earthquakes's community will deeply miss him. And so, the club will continue to celebrate his life and legacy. But for now, they mourn the loss of a talented and dedicated individual. So, the Earthquakes will have to move forward without their head sporting strategist, a difficult task ahead. Cremanzidis's passing has left a void in the club, and it will take time to fill. The Earthquakes will have to find a way to replace him, but for now, they will focus on celebrating his life and honoring his memory.
